Type: Appointed
Term: January 01, 2020- December 31, 2026

Description

It is the duty of the Assessor to identify and value Real Property with the Town in accordance with the Real Property Tax Law of New York State.

All exemptions are administered by the Assessor, including veteran, senior citizen, agricultural, railroad, commercial, and wholly exempt properties. Current senior citizen exemption (over age 65) is based on income. Contact the Office of the Aging in the Annex Building in Cooperstown between the hours of 9-5 for details. Generally, proof of age, a copy of the deed and a combined household income of less than $13,000 yearly will permit the exemption.

For Veteran’s Exemption, contact the Veteran’s Agency in Cooperstown (607-547-4224) for the appropriate form. A copy of the DD214 and a copy of the property deed will be needed to complete the exemption requirements. This is renewed automatically each year after the exemption has been filed.

Exemption forms are avaiable at www.orps.state.ny.us

The Assessor is required to mail to property owners a notice of change in their assessment ten days prior to Grievance Day.
